Lox is never cheap, and while the prices here may have gone up a bit, a bagel with lox here is still a good bargain compared to most places. My wife got a french toast bagel with strawberry cream cheese that she said was excellent. Unlike some Manhattan places, they'll toast a bagel here if that's what you want. I had to settle for poppy seeds, but it was still worth 30 minutes. I'll usually settle for toasted, but a fresh, hot bagel with butter is like nothing else on earth.
This means either getting it really fresh or toasting it. A bagel with cream cheese only needs to be warm to be good, but with butter it needs to be hot. My personal favorite is a simple bagel with butter – preferably with sesame seeds but I'm flexible. Utopia still makes them fresh, now in an elegant open kitchen, and they are some of the best I've ever had. Free parking lot in the back as you do have to pay for street parking via the central parking box during posted hours. It was absolutely stupendous with a generous helping of lox. Definitely worth it and then some! Got the lox and cream cheese with the slice of onion on an egg bagel last time. I have also stopped by on a Saturday at 7:45 am when the line was 14 deep but it was moving. Yes I do need a whole suitcase for the lot but for the 50 ex NYers in my group in Az waiting for Utopia and the next pot luck, this is a no brainer.I got there at 3:50 am and there were 3 cars already parked with folks waiting and ready 2 more pulled up by 4:04 am. So lucky that they open at 4 am when I can get my fix of the fresh hot goodies- I love the everything, garlic, onion and the bialys- and pack another 9 dozen before I drop off the rental car at Budget JFK and get on the 7 am to Phoenix Sky Harbor. Overall, both the bagel and the lox spread were just ok - better than anything I had in SF, but that's not saying very much. Texturally, though, the bagel lacked the softness and chew that I expect from a really good bagel shop.
Toasted, the bagel was a bit burnt at the edges but had just the right amount of cream cheese. Not being too hungry, I ordered their snackable mini bagel and chose their lox spread (from the many they have on offer). Arriving at around 11:30am, the queue to order snaked around the entryway, and for a New York institution, the pace was extremely slow from getting in line to leaving with food in-hand took about 45 minutes. One popular bagel shop I had yet to try was Utopia Bagels, located all the way in Whitestone Queens.
Utopia Bagels Mini Everything Bagel with Lox Spread: I never once had a decent bagel when I lived in the Bay Area, so I'm relieved to now have an abundance of options back in NYC.
